On May 22, 2023, the IER team held a public discussion “Innovations during the war are not on time?”.
Our expert Yevhen Angel presented the results of a study on the innovative activity of enterprises during the war (within the framework of the Monthly survey of enterprises “Ukrainian business during the war”). The panel discussion was attended by Oleksandr Yurchak, Head of the Ukrainian Cluster Alliance, and Vitaliy Gryga, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Economics and Forecasting of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Other representatives of civil society, business, education and science also joined the discussion. Our Executive Director Oksana Kuziakiv moderated the discussion.
The study confirms that a full-scale war has negatively affected the introduction of innovations. In particular, among the main results:
For 31% of enterprises, the introduction of innovations is not relevant at all. During the war, 42% of enterprises reduced the cost of innovation.
73% of enterprises need special long-term programs to support the industry, and 41% need fiscal incentives to stimulate innovation In general, the situation with the innovative activity of enterprises caused concern among the expert community even before a full-scale war. New challenges pose a serious threat to the innovation ecosystem. This caused a long professional discussion of the participants of the event.
